An Update from Kudzu Playhouse

While we were not able to stage live productions in 2020, with the help of several generous supporters, we have managed to keep our heads above water during a time of unexpected and unprecedented challenges. We are immensely proud of our all-volunteer status as a true community theatre group; however, this prevented us from qualifying for a PPP loan. Nevertheless, we endure – not unlike the vine that gives us our name.

Late last year, we announced that we had rescheduled all our 2020 activities and shows to 2021, pending confirmation of dates and facilities. Space has always been Kudzu’s biggest hurdle and we are grateful for the generous individuals and organizations that have allowed us to use their facilities over the years. We were looking forward to resuming many of those relationships this year; however, the likelihood of that diminishes with each passing week. It appears that several of the facilities we have relied on in the past will no longer be available to the public, as organizations reevaluate and shift priorities and policies.

We are actively searching for space that can accommodate our large-scale productions, as well as smaller spaces for rehearsals, camps, and classes. Thankfully, we were recently able to resume our STARS program, albeit on a much smaller scale than before, but we are so grateful to share and interact with our students again. We are exploring several options for our summer camps and are committed to finding a space where we can safely hold them this summer.

Currently, we remain undecided about our main stage productions for 2021. Due to a lack of appropriate performance and rehearsal space, and given the recent passing of our dear friend and director, Wesley Williamson, we are reevaluating our planned production of Matilda. We are also exploring options for our Kidzu production of Moana JR. We appreciate everyone’s patience while we work through the best way to move forward.

Although we cannot know what the future holds, we remain committed to our legacy in the theatre community. Kudzu has a long and rich history, and we are excited to partner with our beloved friends and neighbors to write the next chapter.
